The Strategic Sourcing Buyer will take the lead in shaping and executing smart category strategies that deliver real value and keep us ahead of market trends. This role will collaborate across supply chain, purchasing, and business teams to drive cost savings, streamline processes, and strengthen supplier relationships. Position specifics:

  • Location: Woodstock, IL
  • Schedule: 3 days in office, 2 days remote

What you'll need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain or related degree.
  • Five plus years' procurement experience.
  • Ability to tackle multiple priorities from a variety of internal customers.
  • Demonstrated detail orientation in gathering data and overall quality of work.
  • Proven analytical skills in looking at multiple data sets and providing solutions.
  • Demonstrated negotiating skills for specific line items.
  • Ability to conduct precise and detailed verbal and written communications. Demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-motivated and drive results.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and team skills to quickly develop relationships with peers and internal customers.
  • Proficiency with basic features of Microsoft Office software products.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% across multiple sites and other activities as required by the business.

Nice to have:

  • 7 plus years' procurement experience. Manufacturing based industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated negotiating skills in long term agreements.
  • Technical knowledge of steel products and processes.
  • Known network of suppliers on steel making industries.
  • Continuous improvement processes experience.
  • Solid understanding of commercial contract's terms and conditions.
  • Knowledge of best practice purchasing techniques.
  • Knowledge of ISO Quality system requirements.
  • Demonstrated Project management skills that include utilizing an organized approach, setting priorities, identifying risks and opportunities, managing resources, milestones, and costs in a matrix/cross-functional organization.
  • Understanding of forecasting and demand planning.
  • Proven experience on conducting research, gather market intelligence, and benchmark analysis to understand the supply market and commodity trends.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with suppliers both on-site and off-site to maintain proper inventory levels, quality, and delivery for purchased items.
  • Expedite and assist facilities in the overall purchase of key items to make the process more efficient.
  • Highly results driven with the ability to demonstrate supplier improvement and implement cost reduction programs.
  • Develop sourcing strategy and identify competitive supply sources; prepare RFQ; evaluate responses; document rational for issuing orders; resolve discrepancies with suppliers, receiving and finance.
  • Manage a portfolio of the assigned direct spend, develop a category strategy to increase understanding of cost drivers, and identify additional potential suppliers.
  • Work with cross functional teams on continuous improvements projects to leverage spend for all sites.
  • Negotiate and maintain contract agreements for the assigned categories.
  • Support projects within the plant and Procurement Team including working with Charter's Manufacturing different business divisions to meet business goals.
  • Monitor plans and KPIs to achieve business objectives and departmental targets.
  • Provide accurate, timely, budgetary information, reporting cost movement variation to support operational team and managers.
  • Work with operations to ensure proper supply/inventory levels are ordered, delivered, and/or maintained for efficient production needs.
  • Work and collaborate with the procurement team on the development and implementation of category strategies for effective cost management providing the best internal service while achieving cost savings that directly impacts bottom line performance.
  • Develop analytical processes, savings projects, and performance improvement metrics (KPI's) to monitor progress and ensure savings and performance targets are achieved.
  • Develop successful partnerships with key stakeholders to achieve desired results.
  • Evaluate and analyze suppliers through Supplier Risk Management programs and lead appropriate mitigation strategies.
