Basic Purpose and Function:

A Carpenter First Class at a ship repair yard specializes in constructing, repairing, and maintaining wooden structures, fixtures, and fittings aboard ships and in the yard. This role requires advanced carpentry skills, a thorough understanding of ship construction and repair processes, and the ability to work in a dynamic, maritime-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Shipboard Repairs and Maintenance:

  • Inspect and assess wooden components on vessels, such as decks, railings, furniture, and bulkheads.
  • Repair or replace damaged or worn wooden structures using appropriate techniques and materials.
  • Ensure shipboard carpentry work complies with maritime safety and quality standards

Fabrication and Installation:

  • Construct, modify, and install wooden or composite components for ships, such as ladders, hatches, and cabinetry.
  • Work with specialized marine-grade materials to ensure durability and seaworthiness.
  • Collaborate with naval architects and engineers to interpret technical drawings and specifications.

Yard Work:

  • Build and repair shipyard structures such as scaffolding, platforms, and templates.
  • Assist with creating molds or patterns for ship components when required.
  • Fabricate and install cradles or supports for vessels undergoing repair.

Tools and Equipment Management:

  • Operate and maintain a variety of carpentry tools and equipment, including saws, drills, planers, and sanders.
  • Ensure proper storage, care, and calibration of tools and machinery.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow all shipyard safety protocols, including working in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Comply with maritime regulations, environmental standards, and occupational health policies.

Collaboration and Supervision:

  • Work closely with other trades such as welders, painters, and electricians to ensure seamless repair operations.
  • Provide guidance or mentorship to junior carpenters or apprentices in the yard.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

Experience: At least 5 years of professional carpentry experience, with prior work in a shipyard or maritime setting preferred.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in marine carpentry techniques, including joinery and framing.
  • Ability to work with marine-grade wood and composite materials.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting technical ship schematics and blueprints.

Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting, working at heights, and in confined spaces.

Certifications:

  • Carpentry certification or equivalent training.
  • Familiarity with OSHA or other maritime safety standards is an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with traditional and modern shipbuilding carpentry methods.
  • Familiarity with using epoxy, fiberglass, and other composite materials in marine applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in handling complex repairs.

Work Environment: The role involves working both onboard vessels and in the shipyard, often under challenging conditions such as exposure to weather, noise, and heavy machinery.
